Apollo 10: The first descent to the lunar surface of a manned spacecraft, 1969

Eugene Cernan or Thoams Stafford (Apollo 10): The first descent to the lunar surface of a manned spacecraft: moonscapes seen from record breaking low altitude from the LM Snoopy, 18-26 May 1969.

Two vintage gelatin silver prints on fiber-based paper, printed 1969, each numbered „NASA

AS10-29-4163″ and „NASA AS10-29-4200“ (NASA MSC) in top margin, each 20,3 x 25,4 cm

The primary mission of the crew was to fly the LM within fifty thousand feet of the Moon’s surface in order to inspect landing site 2 on the Sea of Tranquility, tentatively selected as the landing spot for Apollo 11.

From the mission transcript during the LM’s descent approach over the lunar farside when these

photographs were taken:

100:03:49 Stafford (Snoopy): OK. Coming down here we should be on black and white - f:4 at 250 [focal length lens). [...]

100:04:19 Stafford (Snoopy): You know, this place is starting to look at home. [...]

100:05:59 Cernan (Snoopy): I tell you, babe, we’s getting down among dem.

100:06:17 Young (Charlie Brown): Yes. I guess you’re about straight under me now - 14 miles. [...]

100:08:23 Stafford (Snoopy): We’re coming up to crater IX. Jos., we’re coming up to crater IX, I think. We’ll be going straight across it.

100:08:28 Young (Charlie Brown): Roger.

100:08:31 Cernan (Snoopy): Maybe you could tell us better where we are, babe.

100:08:33 Young (Charlie Brown): We’re going right across old number IX. Sure are.

100:08:41 Stafford (Snoopy): Things are starting to move faster, John.

100:08:48 Cernan (Snoopy): OK, Tom, all our - everything’s looking good there, so far. [...]

100:09:12 Stafford (Snoopy): OK. Instead of yawing left and yawing right, I’m just going to stay here and take some [photos] - I think it would be more interesting for the whole thing just to take strip maps here. [...]

100:09:29 Cernan (Snoopy): The important film we want to get is down below, babe.
