James Irwin saluting the American flag at Hadley Base, EVA 3, July 26 – August 7, 1971
Original vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based paper, printed in 1971, numbered „NASA AS15-88- 11866“ (NASA MSC) in red in top margin, with „A KODAK PAPER“ watermark on verso, 20.3 x 25.4 cm .
Few Apollo photographs have been reproduced more often than this color photo of Irwin, the American flag, the Rover, the LM and Mount Hadley Delta in the background.
Hadley Delta rises approximately 3,600 m above the plain; the base of the mountain is 5 km away. “I felt like I was an alien as I traveled through space. When I got on the moon, I felt at home. We had mountains on three sides and had the deep canyon to the west, a beautiful spot to camp. I felt in a way Adam and Eve must have felt as they were standing on the Earth and they realized that they were all alone. “I talk about the Moon as a very holy place.”
James Irwin (Kelley, plate 46).
